Itinerary

Day 1 - London to Strasbourg

Meeting at London St Pancras, your holiday starts here as we depart on the Eurostar to Paris, continuing on the TGV to Strasbourg where you spend the night. This charming French city is a great place to pause your journey. With a captivating blend of German and French influences, the quaint Old Town here is a medieval wonder, dominated by the spectacular Notre Dame Cathedral with its famous astronomical clock and beautiful central square, Place Kléber.

Includes
  • Dinner
Day 2 - From the Alsace to alpine Wilderswil

Make the most of a free morning to explore beautiful Strasbourg. 'La Petite France' is a wonderful location for a stroll. This historic quarter of Strasbourg is divided by the River Ill and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988, largely due to its abundance of half-timbered buildings.

In the afternoon, you continue by rail to Switzerland, passing scenery which increases in beauty as snowy mountains begin to encircle the route. Serene Lake Thun shimmers as you pass Spiez and its fairytale lakeside castle, before you arrive in the pretty alpine village of Wilderswill. Occupying an idyllic spot on the Lütschine river at the heart of the Jungfrau region, Wilderswil is a scenic base from which to enjoy your explorations. You receive a warm welcome at your traditional hotel which been run by the same family for the past 60 years.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Dinner
Day 3 - The Jungfrau Express

Enjoy one of your holiday's highlights today, a return journey to the 'Top of Europe', Jungfraujoch. The first leg of your spectacular rail adventure takes you on the Bernese Oberland Railway, joining the Jungfrau Express at Kleine Scheidegg. Climbing steeply through a tunnel deep inside the Eiger and the Mönch mountains, you emerge just below the summit of the Jungfrau. At more than 11,000 feet, Jungfraujoch is the highest railway station in the continent.

There's some free time here to bask in spellbinding snow-globe views from the Sphinx observatory including vistas of endless mountain peaks and the immense Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps. You could also head to Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven for an insight into the history and making of Swiss chocolate. The Alpine Sensation exhibition is also well worth a visit. Step onto a moving walkway and back in time, as enchanting projected images and music tell of the history of tourism in the Alps and pay tribute to the miners who built the Jungfrau Railway more than 100 years ago.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4 - Interlaken

The capital of the beautiful Bernese Oberland, Interlaken, is one of the most popular towns in the Swiss Alps and, after visiting today, it will be easy to see why. Its scenery showcases all the hallmarks of a picture-postcard Swiss location, with snow-capped peaks, rolling hillsides, rugged rocky outcrops and pristine glaciers. The region provides a year-round playground for climbers, walkers, and skiers.

Interlaken is set in the very heart of this captivating landscape, wedged between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun and surrounded by three peaks: the Jungfrau, Eiger and Mönch. Because of its location, Interlaken is a great starting point for any adventure in the Bernese Oberland. You're free to explore at your own pace using your included travel card which provides 50% discount on rail, bus and boat fares. You could opt to take a cruise across Lake Thun and experience the spectacular winter scenes.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5 - Grindelwald

Travel by train to Grindelwald, a pretty alpine village tucked away at the foot of the north face of the Eiger. This picture-perfect village is one of Europe's oldest mountain resorts, first rising to prominence during the 1920s when the popularity of skiing as a leisure activity grew. The village itself has an abundance of Swiss charm and is surrounded by open skiing fields in winter. You can explore the area at your own pace before returning to Wilderswil for dinner.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6 - At leisure in Wilderswil

Today, you are free to discover the area further. Perhaps cross the Brünig Pass to Lucerne and discover this pretty lakeside city known as the 'City of Lights'. Lucerne exudes class, culture, and history, made up by the beautifully preserved medieval architecture which dots the centre of town. Well worth a visit is the 14th-century Chapel Bridge with the impressive Water Tower which rises up from the lake. Both of these are regarded as the most photographed sights in all of Switzerland.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 7 – Wilderswil & London

Your holiday ends today, as you board a train to Lausanne. From here you travel by TGV to Paris, where you connect with the Eurostar back to London St Pancras.

Very disappointed that we were left to our own devices after the trip to the jungfrau. Nowhere near as good as the GLACIER Express holiday I did 18 months ago.

I travelled on this trip in February, and was the first time I had done anything like this before. Therefore I have no other trip to compare with. However for me this was a great trip. Everything worked well and our tour guide Wendy was there to make sure everything worked well for us. The balance for organised trips and free time worked well for me, giving me chance to explore at my own pace. The main Hotel for the trip was very good, however the Hotel in Strasbourg was rather bland but nonetheless comfortable. My only cause for concern was the walk across Paris from the Eurostar Terminal to the Swiss Rail connection where I thought the group was left vulnerable, and although there was a coach connection on the return journey part of the tour, we were still left to cross several busy intersections in Paris. Personally I would have been happy to pay extra for a smaller group maybe of 20 rather than the 30 in our group. Nevertheless, I think the trip was great and would highly recommend
