This nation is best explored on the ground, and watching it unfold on The Outer Hebrides and the Highlands holiday allows you to experience Scotland by train, coach and even boat. Each day brings a new adventure, with one of the most unique coming on Day 4 - the day of our sea eagle safari.
Out on the water
While visiting the Isle of Lewis, the largest of the Outer Hebrides, we make our base near the largest city in this archipelago, Stornoway. Day 4 is our first full day here, and after breakfast, we head to the waterfront for a four-hour safari showcasing the coast and the wildlife that makes its home there, including sea eagles.
Picture yourself out on the water in a rigid inflatable boat (RIB), the wind in your hair and the stunning scenery all around. Cruise between the Shaint Isles, the Witches Pool, and lochs like Erisort, Leurbost and Grimshader while keeping watch for the marine life beyond our RIB. In addition to majestic sea eagles, you may spot puffins, whales and orcas, so keep your camera ready.
We always advise dressing warmly for the breeze that accompanies these views, but don't worry; the crew does their best to keep everyone comfortable and dry.
Lunch harbourside
After the safari, we head back into Stornoway Harbour, the beating heart of this small island town. Look back out at the views of the water as we head to the Royal Hotel, which is beloved as the Isle of Lewis' most historic hotel.
With a prime location overlooking the marina and the stunning architecture of Lews Castle, the Royal Hotel's setting is just as impressive as its dining room menu. Here, we enjoy a traditional fish and chip lunch, with the fish locally sourced from the waters surrounding us. A taste of the isles, indeed.
An afternoon at leisure
From this point, your afternoon is a time for relaxation and exploration in Borve, where our hotel is located. You might like to wander along the nearby beaches, which are beautiful even in the cooler season.
If you are up for more walking, there is a leisurely trail near High Borve, the Borve Hill and Pol an Oir trail, which provides another chance to birdwatch and soak in the seaside views. The Borve Standing Stones are also incredible to behold.
Heading back into Stornoway on your own, you might like to admire the charming cottages or wander through the 'Narrows', the pedestrianised shopping streets. The town is steeped in Gaelic culture, and there are plenty of ways to experience it during your free time, including seeking out the traditional Gaelic street signs or listening to live music in a local pub. After all, experiencing the traditions and culture firsthand is the best way to immerse yourself in a new destination.

A day filled with nature, culture and beautiful sights, Day 4 offers memories that last a lifetime, and luckily for our travellers, this is just one of the fabulous adventures this journey has to offer.
Travel along the storied West Highland Line to historic Fort William, crossing the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, and cruise from mainland Scotland to the Outer Hebrides. We also visit the 5,000-year-old Callanish Stones and step back in time at the Gearrannan Blackhouse Village. This is truly a Scottish holiday to treasure.
