Situated at the meeting point of the Rhine and Moselle rivers, Koblenz takes its name from its position at their 'confluence'. The modern town has ancient roots that go all the way back to the Romans, who established a strategic settlement and military stronghold here in about 8 BC.
In later years, the Archbishop-Electors of Trier moved their court here, and under their influence Koblenz was expanded in a neo-classical style by the late 18th century. They also built the mighty Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. Completed in 1832, the fortress was never attacked and today the magnificent complex houses a fantastic museum with exhibits on the region's history. As well as being one of Koblenz's best-loved attractions, the fortress also affords a wonderful panorama over the town and the rivers.

Heritage site; as such there are many views of the beautiful
surrounding area to be seen from the town.
There are also a number of attractions in Koblenz itself.
As well as the beautifully preserved Old Town and popular river
promenades, there is 'Deutsches Eck' (the German Corner). Set on
the corner between the two rivers, the monument was originally a
tribute to Kaiser Wilhelm I but now stands as a fitting monument to
unified Germany.
